An Interdisciplinary, Project-Based Learning Model

At Keystone Prep, students don't simply memorize information — they investigate, create, collaborate, solve problems, and apply learning in meaningful ways. Our model blends two core approaches that reinforce one another.

Project-Based Learning

Long-Form Projects

18-week time frame
  • Students explore solutions across multiple disciplines
  • May require community collaborations
  • Students actively participate in the solution
  • Projects may make a real-world impact
  • Involves authentic learning experiences
  • Skills: Collaboration, communication, self-direction
Both Involve

Shared Core

  • Real-world problems
  • Interdisciplinary learning
  • Problem solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Introspection
  • Creativity
Problem-Based Learning

Short-Form Challenges

1–5 day time frame
  • Students focus on a targeted set of solutions
  • Typically classroom-based
  • Solutions may be theoretical or applied
  • Builds focused analytical skills
  • Groups investigate, analyze, and develop responses
  • Skills: Perspective-taking, teamwork, information literacy

Interdisciplinary Projects

Integrating knowledge from two or more disciplines to address complex issues. Woven into both PBL and Problem-Based models to encourage collaboration and innovation.

Portfolio Assessments

Students build a collection of work over time that showcases growth and achievement — a comprehensive alternative to traditional exams that captures the full learning journey.

Student Showcase Events

Semester-end events where students present their projects and celebrate accomplishments. Builds confidence, public speaking skills, and a sense of pride in completed work.

Discipline-Specific Field Trips

Once per semester, every grade level takes curriculum-integrated field trips. Age-appropriate, fully included in course content so all students can participate and benefit.

Supporting Every Learner

Every student's journey looks different. Keystone Prep offers three academic tracks to ensure the curriculum meets students where they are — from those needing additional support to those seeking the most rigorous academic challenges.

01

Advanced Coursework

Many courses are offered at an Honors level. Dual Enrollment partnerships with Hillsborough Community College, Pasco-Hernando Community College, and the University of South Florida are available. KPHS is also a testing site for SAT, ACT, and others.

02

Modified — Access Points

Modified courses for students needing additional Reading or Mathematics support, following Florida Access Points standards. Students in modified academic courses may still select a magnet track for elective courses. Modifications are administered by the ESE team.

03

General Education

The majority of courses are General Education, appropriate for the general student population, students with or without learning disabilities, and gifted students. Students with accommodations access these courses through their individualized plans.

Accommodations

KPHS provides specific accommodations based on each student's unique needs, using IEPs, 504s, and psychoeducational evaluations. Built into every classroom by default:

  • Small class size (~10 students average, 16 maximum)
  • Extended time
  • Preferential seating
  • Variety of assessment formats

Florida Virtual School (FLVS)

Keystone Prep is partnered with Florida Virtual School to expand elective offerings for students. An FLVS Coordinator works directly with the KPHS facilitator to monitor student progress.

  • Driver's Education
  • American Sign Language
  • Additional elective options
